 While in Vancouver, BC for Unbounce’s Call-To-Action Conference, an opportunity to learn how to throw an axe presented itself at one of the Sunday Funday activities.  Bend, Oregon Although I was never one to sleep in until the afternoon, I was always reluctant to title myself a "morning" person. Yet, I've come to realize that my productivity is at its all time high within my first hours of waking up.
I've also realized that in order to equally pursue each of my passions (music, business, and fitness), I need to maximize my time when I'm the most productive - in the morning. I started a new routine in late November that involves getting up at 5:30am, and I'm still sticking to it! As a high school senior, I visited Towson and was instantly drawn to their signature program - The Associate, a competition modeled after the hit T.V. show, The Apprentice. Senior business students compete for a job during an eight week period solving real problems and present their solutions to local businesses. After applying and becoming one of 8 students chosen to compete, I was ecstatic to participate in something that sealed the deal for me to attend Towson in the first place.
My four years at Towson University were some of the best times of my life. I enjoyed every minute of it. However, there were some major decisions that I made that made my experience particularly memorable. The tie between all three choices was that they were outside of my comfort zone, challenged me to push myself past my limits, and helped me to not only realize my passions, but also to pursue them.
 In order to reach happiness, you need to step out of your comfort zone and conquer the area of uncertainty inbetween. Everything that they say will happen to you when you’re a second semester senior, does. Reality sets in and it sets in hard.
In a few months, myself, amongst millions of other graduates, will have to make some of the biggest decisions of our lives… where to live? what career path to take? which job? There most definitely is uncertainty staring at me and all the other grads in the face. What we have to do.... is embrace it. After becoming undoubtedly overwhelmed at the thought of post-grad life, I had to sit and really think it over. With the help of someone close to me, I was able to take a step back and visualize the path that I need to set for myself for these next four months. What he helped me to realize, is that if I want to be happy with a career choice, I need to step outside of my comfort zone. In order to do this, I’m setting myself one of the most important goals this semester: pursue my passions. At the beginning of the semester, I was assigned the title of “Chief Executive Officer” for Microsoft in my “CEO Simulator” course led by Sam Polakoff of TBB Global Logistics. Throughout the semester, I’ve been keeping tabs on Microsoft’s stock and current events that have been happening throughout the organization and its environment. I must say that it has been incredible so far! For our midterm project, each “CEO” was required to give a mock Board of Directors meeting that outlined our vision, as the CEO, for our company. For my Board of Directors meeting last Monday, I presented to 6 business professionals in the Baltimore area on a strategy for Microsoft to get involved in the Internet of Things (IoT), a revolutionary idea of the next stage of the Internet. This concept has completely intrigued me and I’m sure it will do the same for others, too. So, I wanted to write a little about it.  That's me at my high school graduation! I recently had to write an essay for a scholarship describing the advice I'd give to a freshman entering my high school alma mater, Elizabeth Forward.
My answer was short and succinct (due to the shortage of space on the application and the restriction that I had to hand-write it). Rather than going with the cliche "be yourself" or "take as many AP classes as possible" advice, I opted for something way more valuable (in my opinion, at least).... -----------------------------------------  Screenshot of Google Maps for Google Headquarters. But alas, the spring semester has ended and now I’m finally free! So what's been up since December? I started an internship with Right Source Marketing in January that I thoroughly enjoy. BUT gaining this experience has only expanded my curiosity of what kinds of businesses are out there that I could get my hands on. I’ve caught myself wondering what it would be like to work for a major tech-savvy company such as Google or Pinterest, and from what I’ve been told my entire undergraduate career, there is nothing wrong with reaching out and seeing what is available. There’s only one problem—location. |
